SPEECH RECOGNITION

Subtitle Studio lets you choose from several Whisper-family models, which are downloaded from the application's model CDN at runtime. Each model is packaged as a whisper.cpp compatible GGML binary and retains the license of its upstream Hugging Face repository. You may also supply your own .bin / .gguf whisper.cpp compatible model files.

MODELS

Whisper Large V2 / Whisper Large V3 (OpenAI)

Paper: Radford et al., "Robust Speech Recognition via Large-Scale Weak Supervision" (arXiv:2212.04356).

Whisper Large V3 — Cantonese GGML

Cantonese-focused GGML/quantized redistribution of Whisper Large V3.

Breeze ASR 25 — Taiwanese Mandarin (MediaTek Research)

Fine-tuned for Taiwanese Mandarin; GGML binary converted by alan314159. Paper: Chou et al., "A Self-Refining Framework for Enhancing ASR Using TTS-Synthesized Data" (arXiv:2506.11130).

Breeze ASR 26 — Taiwanese Hokkien / Taigi (MediaTek Research)

Fine-tuned for Taiwanese Hokkien (Taigi) on ~10,000 hours of speech; GGML binary converted by doggy8088.

RUNTIME

whisper.cpp (v1.8.2)

Bundled native libraries in whisper/engine/ for on-device transcription inference. Uses GGML (MIT).

GGML (v0.13.1)

Tensor library for machine learning that enables large models to run with high performance on commodity hardware. It underpins whisper.cpp, qwen3-asr.cpp and llama.cpp in this application.

NVIDIA CUDA Runtime — optional GPU acceleration, Windows

Not bundled with the application. When you opt in to GPU acceleration on Windows, the CUDA build of whisper.cpp — which carries the redistributable CUDA runtime libraries cudart64_12.dll, cublas64_12.dll and cublasLt64_12.dll — is downloaded at runtime into the user data directory (whisper-cuda-engine/) and can be removed again from the GPU Acceleration dialog. These libraries are the NVIDIA redistributables permitted for redistribution under the CUDA Toolkit EULA; the NVIDIA display driver itself is supplied by you. The whisper.cpp binaries in the same asset remain MIT-licensed.

whisper.cpp Vulkan build — optional GPU acceleration, Windows / AMD

Not bundled with the application. Upstream whisper.cpp publishes no AMD binary, so this asset is built from unmodified whisper.cpp sources with the GGML Vulkan backend enabled and is entirely MIT-licensed — whisper-cli.exe, whisper.dll, ggml.dll, ggml-base.dll, ggml-cpu.dll and ggml-vulkan.dll, including the SPIR-V compute shaders compiled into the last of these from whisper.cpp's own GLSL. When you opt in to GPU acceleration on an AMD machine it is downloaded at runtime into the user data directory (whisper-vulkan-engine/) and can be removed again from the GPU Acceleration dialog. Nothing from the LunarG Vulkan SDK is redistributed: it is a build-time dependency only, and the Vulkan loader (vulkan-1.dll) on your machine comes from your Radeon driver.

FORCED ALIGNMENT

Qwen3 Forced Aligner 0.6B (Alibaba Cloud / Qwen Team)

Used by Auto Fix Subtitle Timing to align existing subtitle text to audio. The GGUF model file is downloaded at runtime from the application's model CDN; the upstream Hugging Face repository is the authoritative license source. Paper: Shi et al., "Qwen3-ASR Technical Report" (arXiv:2601.21337).

qwen3-asr.cpp (Forced Aligner Runtime)

Bundled CLI and native libraries in forced-aligner/ for on-device forced alignment inference. Uses GGML (MIT).

TRANSLATION

Qwen3-4B-Instruct-2507 (Alibaba Cloud / Qwen Team)

Used for on-device subtitle translation. The Q4_K_M GGUF file (qwen3-4b-instruct-2507-q4_k_m.gguf) is downloaded at runtime from the application's model CDN; the upstream Hugging Face repository is the authoritative license source. Paper: Qwen Team, "Qwen3 Technical Report" (arXiv:2505.09388).

llama.cpp (Translation LLM Runtime)

Bundled native addon and shared libraries in translation-llm/engine/ for on-device translation inference. Uses GGML (MIT).

VOICE ISOLATION

DeepFilterNet (Windows)

The prebuilt deep-filter binary is shipped in denoise/ on Windows and fetched by scripts/setup-deep-filter.js. It is statically linked and embeds its own model weights; upstream's dual license covers the code and the weights together. Windows uses it in place of the macOS AVFoundation/Cinematic helper, which has no Windows equivalent. Papers: Schröter et al., "DeepFilterNet2: Towards Real-Time Speech Enhancement on Embedded Devices for Full-Band Audio" (arXiv:2205.05474); "DeepFilterNet: Perceptually Motivated Real-Time Speech Enhancement" (arXiv:2305.08227).

AVFoundation Cinematic Audio Mix (macOS)

  • Author: Apple Inc.
  • License: Apple system framework, used via public API; not redistributed
Drives swift/remove-background.swift. Requires macOS 26 or later.

VOICE ACTIVITY DETECTION

Silero VAD (v6.2.0)

The GGML-converted model vad/ggml-silero-v6.2.0.bin is bundled with the application and used by the whisper.cpp VAD front-end to skip silence before transcription. Silero VAD is published under the MIT license with no usage restrictions, and the license covers the model weights as well as the code.

FONTS

Every typeface bundled with Subtitle Studio is licensed under the SIL Open Font License, Version 1.1. The full license text, together with the copyright notice reproduced from each font file's own name table, ships with the application as licenses/OFL-1.1.txt and is reachable from Help → Font Licenses (OFL 1.1). All fonts are shipped unmodified and none is distributed under a Reserved Font Name belonging to another party.

Geist and Geist Mono are the application's own interface typefaces. They are fetched at build time by next/font/google and self-hosted inside the application's web assets rather than loaded from a Google server at runtime, so they are redistributed with the app and are covered by the notice above.

SUBSTITUTIONS

Inter, EB Garamond and Newsreader appear in the subtitle style picker as open-licensed stand-ins for Neue Helvetica (Monotype), Apple Garamond (Apple/ITC) and Scholar (Great Studio). Those three typefaces are not redistributable and are not included in this software; only the open-licensed substitutes are shipped, each under its own real name.

IMPORTED FONTS

You may import your own font files through the subtitle style panel. Those files are read from your own disk, are never bundled or uploaded, and remain subject to whatever licence you hold for them.

FFMPEG & FFPROBE

  • License: depends on the build — see the table below. FFmpeg itself is LGPL 2.1+ / LGPL 3.0 with --enable-version3; a build configured with --enable-gpl is covered by the GPL instead.
  • Copyright: © 2000–2026 the FFmpeg developers
  • Website: https://ffmpeg.org/
  • Usage: downloaded at runtime for video/audio processing and media file analysis
  • Source code: https://git.ffmpeg.org/ffmpeg.git
  • License details: https://ffmpeg.org/legal.html

VERSIONS IN USE

Linux (x64 / arm64)latest release (John Van Sickle)GPL 3.0 — all static builds published there are GPL 3.0johnvansickle.com/ffmpeg

On Windows and Linux the binaries are third-party GPL 3.0 builds. Subtitle Studio does not link against them and does not redistribute them: they are fetched from their publishers' own servers at your request, run as separate processes over a command-line interface, and can be replaced by you with any other FFmpeg build (see Replacing FFmpeg/FFprobe below). No part of Subtitle Studio is derived from FFmpeg. The corresponding sources for each of these builds are available from their publishers and from https://git.ffmpeg.org/ffmpeg.git.

MACOS BUILD CONFIGURATION

libswresample 6. 4.100

Compliance: binaries are downloaded separately at runtime and are not bundled with the application. You may replace them with your own builds — see Replacing FFmpeg/FFprobe below.

REPLACING FFMPEG/FFPROBE

You can replace the FFmpeg and FFprobe binaries with your own builds by dropping them into these directories:

macOS ~/Library/Application Support/Subtitle Studio/ffmpeg-binaries/
Windows %APPDATA%\Subtitle Studio\ffmpeg-binaries\
Linux ~/.config/Subtitle Studio/ffmpeg-binaries/

To build FFmpeg from source yourself:

git clone https://git.ffmpeg.org/ffmpeg.git
cd ffmpeg
./configure --enable-gpl=no --enable-version3=no
make
make install

LICENSE COMPLIANCE

Subtitle Studio is committed to complying with all open-source licenses:

1. MIT and Apache-2.0 components:

The majority of components — whisper.cpp, GGML, llama.cpp, qwen3-asr.cpp, Silero VAD, the Whisper and Qwen3 models and most npm packages — use the MIT or Apache 2.0 licenses, which permit use, modification and distribution with attribution. Full license texts are reproduced below.

2. LGPL / GPL components:

No LGPL- or GPL-licensed component is linked into the application. FFmpeg and FFprobe are downloaded at runtime from their publishers, invoked as separate processes, and replaceable by you; the macOS build is LGPL 3.0 and the Windows and Linux builds are GPL 3.0 builds published by gyan.dev and John Van Sickle respectively. libvips (via Sharp) is used at build time only and is excluded from the packaged application. Sources and build instructions for all of them are available upstream.

3. Fonts:

Every bundled typeface is SIL OFL 1.1. The full licence text and the copyright notice for each font ship with the application as licenses/OFL-1.1.txt, satisfying clause 2 of the OFL. No font is sold, no font is modified, and no Reserved Font Name is reused.

4. Attribution:

Proper attribution is provided for all CC-BY, MPL and BSD-licensed components.

5. Source availability:

Source code and build instructions for all copyleft components are available from their respective upstream projects.

SIL OPEN FONT LICENSE Version 1.1 - 26 February 2007

PREAMBLE

The goals of the Open Font License (OFL) are to stimulate worldwide
development of collaborative font projects, to support the font creation
efforts of academic and linguistic communities, and to provide a free and
open framework in which fonts may be shared and improved in partnership
with others.

The OFL allows the licensed fonts to be used, studied, modified and
redistributed freely as long as they are not sold by themselves. The
fonts, including any derivative works, can be bundled, embedded,
redistributed and/or sold with any software provided that any reserved
names are not used by derivative works. The fonts and derivatives,
however, cannot be released under any other type of license. The
requirement for fonts to remain under this license does not apply to any
document created using the fonts or their derivatives.

DEFINITIONS

"Font Software" refers to the set of files released by the Copyright
Holder(s) under this license and clearly marked as such. This may
include source files, build scripts and documentation.

"Reserved Font Name" refers to any names specified as such after the
copyright statement(s).

"Original Version" refers to the collection of Font Software components as
distributed by the Copyright Holder(s).

"Modified Version" refers to any derivative made by adding to, deleting,
or substituting -- in part or in whole -- any of the components of the
Original Version, by changing formats or by porting the Font Software to a
new environment.

"Author" refers to any designer, engineer, programmer, technical writer or
other person who contributed to the Font Software.

PERMISSION & CONDITIONS

Permission is hereby granted, free of charge, to any person obtaining a
copy of the Font Software, to use, study, copy, merge, embed, modify,
redistribute, and sell modified and unmodified copies of the Font
Software, subject to the following conditions:

1) Neither the Font Software nor any of its individual components, in
Original or Modified Versions, may be sold by itself.

2) Original or Modified Versions of the Font Software may be bundled,
redistributed and/or sold with any software, provided that each copy
contains the above copyright notice and this license. These can be
included either as stand-alone text files, human-readable headers or in
the appropriate machine-readable metadata fields within text or binary
files as long as those fields can be easily viewed by the user.

3) No Modified Version of the Font Software may use the Reserved Font
Name(s) unless explicit written permission is granted by the
corresponding Copyright Holder. This restriction only applies to the
primary font name as presented to the users.

4) The name(s) of the Copyright Holder(s) or the Author(s) of the Font
Software shall not be used to promote, endorse or advertise any
Modified Version, except to acknowledge the contribution(s) of the
Copyright Holder(s) and the Author(s) or with their explicit written
   permission.

5) The Font Software, modified or unmodified, in part or in whole, must be
distributed entirely under this license, and must not be distributed
under any other license. The requirement for fonts to remain under this
license does not apply to any document created using the Font Software.

TERMINATION

This license becomes null and void if any of the above conditions are not
met.

DISCLAIMER

THE FONT SOFTWARE IS PROVIDED "AS IS", WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND,
EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO ANY WARRANTIES OF
MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE AND NONINFRINGEMENT OF
